QUALIFICATIONS

 

As partners in the instructional process, paraprofessionals who work in programs supported by Title I funds must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education, or Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education:
  2. Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Professional Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC)
  3. A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam
  4. ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required
  5. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.
  6. Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed.
  7. Title I or Skipped Title I Schools require #1, 2, 3, or 4 above achieved prior to being hired or applicant will be hired as a substitute until achieved.  

      

 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participate in on-going in-service related to the needs of emotionally impaired students.
  2. Posses the physical strength and stamina for non-violent intervention when necessary.
  3. Maintain a calm manner in handling behavior problems.
  4. Accompany and participate with class field trips and home visits.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to apply appropriate intervention and behavior modification methods developed for the class as a group or for individual students.
  6. Carry out specific instructional strategies and directions given by the classroom teacher.
  7. Communicate effectively with staff, parents and students.
  8. Demonstrate good judgment to provide for the safety of all students and staff.
  9. Maintain confidentiality regarding students, classroom procedures, instructional materials, and behavior management.
  10. Maintain student logs and/or written communications with parents as directed by the teacher.
  11. Assist in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria and playground.
  12. Demonstrate the flexibility to respond to changes in assignment in emergency situations as determined by the building administrator.
  13. Dress appropriately for non-violent physical intervention.
  14. Perform other related duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
  15. Demonstrate the ability to develop and sustain a rapport with an individual student while maintaining a professional relationship.
  16. Perform other duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
  17. Conducts him/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups.
